Solly Zuckerman was a member of the General Advisory Council that began its three-year term under Norman Fisher's chairmanship on 1 October 1956. In spite of making only rare appearances at meetings he was re-appointed in August 1959 to serve until 1962. The correspondence in File SZ/BBC/2 is slight, consisting largely of apologies for absence from meetings. The exception is an exchange of letters with Lady Tweedsmuir over Zuckerman's misgivings that the quality of schools broadcasts by the new independent companies could match that of the BBC.
As well as numbered Council papers, File SZ/BBC/3 contains copies of BBC annual reports and other BBC publications, a copy of the report of the GPO Television Advisory Committee 1960, HMSO, 1960, and a folder of specimens of audience research documents.
