Scope and Content

A collection of mathematical notebooks, notes and exercises, 1908 - 1912; printed papers, pamphlets and off-prints most of which appeared in the Reports and Memoranda series published by the Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (later the Aeronautical Research Committee and afterwards the Aeronautical Research Council), written by Robert Jones and others and D.H. Williams and others, 1908 - 1954; printed books on various mathematical and aeronautical subjects together with a few University College of North Wales Handbooks and Calendars, 1850 - 1948; photographs of student groups and the staff of the Compressed Air Tunnel, Aerodynamics Division, N.P.L.; a miscellaneous group of examination papers, testimonials, articles, reports and letters.

Administrative / Biographical History

Robert Jones, 1891 - 1962, was born at Tynewydd, Cricieth, Caernarfonshire and educated at Portmadoc County School and at the University College of North Wales. He graduated in 1911 with a 2nd class honours degree in Pure Mathematics, and followed this with a 1st class honours degree in Applied Mathematics in 1912. He gained an M.A. degree in 1913 and was awarded a D.Sc. in 1924. He joined the staff of the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, Middlesex, in 1914 and remained there until his retirement in 1953. From 1931 until his retirement he was in charge of the Compressed Air Tunnel (C.A.T.) at the N.P.L.

Daniel Howell Williams, whose printed scientific papers are amongst these papers, was a colleague of Dr Robert Jones. D.H. Williams of Ffestiniog and Bangor, Caernarfonshire was educated at Friars School, Bangor and at the University College of North Wales. He graduated in 1917 with a 1st class honours in Pure Mathematics. He joined the staff of the Aerodynamics Division of the N.P.L. where he also remained until his retirement.
