Scope and Content

Collection of poetry by Bythell published in the 'Salopian Journal' under the titles 'My Portfolio', 'Lays of the Past' and 'Reminiscences' together with extracts from his 'Journal of a Fishing Excursion into Wales, 1825-29', and other printed poetry and cuttings, and broadsheets. The collection was made by Edward Edwards of Shropshire, with a handwritten forward by Bythell himself at the front of the volume.

Administrative / Biographical History

John William Bythell (d. 18 March 1851) was a poet and author, who published numerous works throughout his life, with his most well-known works being the 'News-Room' and 'Salopia'. Though little is known of his life, it is presumed from information given within this volume that he lived in Shrewsbury for a large portion of his adult life that he was a solicitor by profession. He was also a Clerk of the Peace and 'Master Extraordinary in Chancery'. He died in 1851 after a short illness
