Administrative / Biographical History
Frederick Morris Martin was born on 02 October 1923 , the son of J and M Martin. In 1947 he married Cicely Frances Brown and had one son and two daughters. He was educated at London elementary and secondary schools, going on to study at Birkbeck College, University of London. He graduated in 1949 with First Class Honours in Psychology with Sociology. From 1949-1952 he taught social psychology at the London School of Economics, and subsequently combined a research appointment at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine with a part time lectureship in psychology and sociology at Birkbeck College. From 1956-1967 he was successively Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader in the department of Social Medicine at the University of Edinburgh . In 1967 he returned to London to join the Greater London Council where he became the Assistant Director of Research and Intelligence. In 1969 he was promoted to Head of Social Research and Policy Division. In 1972 Frederick Morris Martin returned to Scotland again to become a Professor of Social Administration at the University of Glasgow , where he remained until 1985 . His publications include: (with Jean Floud and A H Halsey) Social Class and educational Opportunity , (1956); (with G F Rehin) Patterns of Performance in Community Care , (1978); (with Margaret Bone and Bernadette Spain) Plans and Provisions for the Mentally Handicapped , (1972); ed, (with Kathleen Murray) Children's Hearings , (1976); ed, Social Services in Scotland , (1979); (with S J Fox and Kathleen Murray) Children out of Court , (1981); as well as WHO Reports, PEP pamphlets, papers and reviews in Social science and medical journals.
