Scope and Content

The papers are a correspondence between the principal of the University College, John Murray, and Lady Baillie, regarding the gift of the books and related matters.

Administrative / Biographical History

Lady Helena Baillie was the wife of Sir James B. Baillie, Vice-Chancellor of Leeds University. On her husband's death she donated 534 of his books on philosophy and ethics to the library of the University College of the South West.

Custodial History

The papers were originally passed to a relative of Lady Baillie's (together with some other papers relating to the Brotherton Library, University of Leeds) and were sorted by a member of the Department of English at the University of York. They were received by the Librarian in December 1998 and accessioned formally in December 2000.

Related Material

See MS 671 private journals 1930-1936 of James Black Baillie, which are held at the University of Leeds Special Collections. These were donated in 1982 and 1984 by the same relative of Lady Baillie.
