Records of Tenby Borough, 1849-1977, comprising Clerk's records, 1856-1977, including Council and committee minutes, agendas and reports, 1946-1974, bye-laws, 1939-1962, Clerk's files covering coastal erosion, water supply, transport and housing, 1856-1977, conveyances, leases and agreements, 1870-[1968]; Treasurer's records, 1849-1974, including annual abstracts of accounts, 1885-1973, ledgers, 1895-1897, rating and valuation records, 1849, 1928-1974, and miscellaneous papers, 1897-1963; Medical Officer of Health's records, 1895-1970, including reports, 1895-1943; and Borough Surveyor's files relating to water and sewerage, Corporation property and housing estates, [1937]-1964.

Tenby, Pembrokeshire, was the site of a Welsh fortress which was captured by the Normans in the late 11th century. The town was awarded its first charter in 1290 by Wiliam de Valence, Lord of Pembroke. Henry IV's charter of 1402 granted the election of a Mayor and two Bailiffs while Elizabeth I's Charter of Incorporation of 1581 granted Tenby the status of a Borough. The Municipal Corporations Act 1835 resulted in the borough being reconstituted. It was subsequently run by a Borough Council, comprising a Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors, who were elected by the ratepayers. The Council also employed officials such as a Clerk, Treasurer, Medical Officer of Health and Borough Surveyor. As a result of the Local Government Act 1972 the borough was abolished in 1974, and most of its powers assumed by South Pembrokeshire District Council.
