Scope and Content

The collection comprises a roll of annual coal sale totals, written out in manuscript.

It is in the form of a table, with sections for each year (commencing at the end of December). There are columns for the total weight sold, in tons and hundredweights (Cwt), the price per ton, and the total value of sales in pounds, shillings and pence. A loose first page is titled 'Quantity and value of coals sold January 7th 1859 to December 28th 1864', although the portion of paper recording all details for 1859 and the weights for 1860 has been lost. The sheets recording totals for 1865 onwards have been glued together to form a continuous roll.

Initially, there are 26 rows per year, suggesting fortnightly calculations, and a total at the bottom of each column. From 1874 onwards, monthly rather than fortnightly figures are given.

From 1873 onwards, a deduction is made for the cost of railway carriage, and an annual average cost per ton given rather than a fortnightly figure.

Administrative / Biographical History

Bretby Colliery commenced operation in 1855 under the ownership of the 6th Earl of Chesterfield. It was taken over by the National Coal Board when the coal industry was nationalised in 1947.
