Autographs and Engravings collected by Philip H. Hope

The Hope collection consists of his personal autograph collection collected during the late 19th/early 20th centuries of various notable figures of the time. There is also a collection of printed engraving of historical figures covering the dates 1467-1910.

Very little can be discovered concerning Philip Henry Hope. The evidence presented shows that he was an autograph collector and the surviving envelopes show that he lived in various locations upon the Wirral. He is listed in Kelly's Directory of Liverpool for 1931 as living in Oxton, Wirral but is not listed in the 1939 volume, presumably he died at some point between these dates. His occupation is unknown though he must of been of some importance as he was able to donate materials to the foundation of the Liverpool Museum (see Hope I.167 ).

The material is arranged into two parts:

• Hope I: Autograph Collection
• Hope II: Engraving Collection

The material remains in the order in which it was deposited.

Access is open to bona fide researchers an appointment must be made in advance of any visit.

The collection was accessioned on 9 July 1948. The Accession register for the library [A197/D2/5] lists the collection as Gift G26847 "Autograph and illustrative material collected by him, mounted on 178 album leaves", "1578-1924". The donor is listed as the Institute of Archaeology.
