Scope and Content

Political and personal correspondence of Edwin Scrymgeour, and print material relating to Prohibitionist, anti-gambling, anti-smoking and anti-vivisection campaigns in the UK, c. 1890-1940. Includes correspondence with Prohibitionist and Temperance organisations in England. Canada and elsewhere, postcards and photographs of Scrymgeour and his circle, and occasional issues of local publications (including the Caledon Welfare Magazine, and Scottish Prohibitionist Newspaper.) Box-level descriptions for most boxes are available on request and will be added here in the future.

Administrative / Biographical History

Edwin Scrymgeour (28 July 1866 – 1 February 1947) was Member of Parliament for Dundee 1922-1931. He is notable as the only Prohibitionist British Member of Parliament. His party, the Scottish Prohibitionist Party, were left-wing and sympathetic to the Labour movement.
