Scope and Content

Comprises photographs taken by Kelsall while on leave from the British Army in India, broadly 1890-1910, showing scenes in India, Sri Lanka (dated 1905), China, Japan, Burma and Korea. The subjects include buildings, people and landscapes. A few of the photographs taken in China have been partly coloured in. Most are undated.

Administrative / Biographical History

Hope Waddell Kelsall (1869-1949) was born at sea off the Isle of Wight. He married Jane Hope Mitchell in Averstoke, Gosport, in 1899. At this time he was a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers. Kelsall served in the British Army in India.
