Scope and Content

The collection consists almost entirely of alphabetical indexes for primary sources used by Professor Erickson in her research. These span the period 1840-1950, and cover many different aspects of the hosiery industry. Sources used were records of births and marriages and other parish registers, local directories, poll books, school records, census returns and newspapers. There is also a small number of offprints from a variety of hosiery trade journals and local Nottingham newspapers.

Administrative / Biographical History

Professor Erickson undertook research for the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, London. The Institute was founded in 1938 to promote systematic research in the field of economics. Such work was carried out by its own staff and in joint ventures with universities and academic bodies. The results of this research were published in several series. Dr Erickson's study led to her publication British Industrialists: Steel and Hosiery 1850-1950 (1959).

Professor Erickson assembled a substantial research resource about hosiers in Nottingham drawing on a variety of sources.
