Administrative / Biographical History

John Hunter (1746-1837) was the first lay Principal of United College, St Andrews. He had studied at Edinburgh University, acted as clerk to Lord Monboddo, and was then appointed in 1775 as professor of humanity at St Andrews University. He remained in this post until 1835, only retiring to become Principal.
