Deeds, copy deeds (the earliest of which in translation) and papers relating to estates and royalties at Grindon and Silksworth, and Sheriff Hill (also known as Gateshead Park Moor, or Ellison Main Colliery) on Gateshead Moor, Co. Durham, with wayleaves, staithes etc., and to premises at Horton Grange and Spital and Backworth Colliery, Earsdon in Northumberland, in the same ownership, 1313-1940. Latterly, the Waldie-Griffith family of Hendersyde, Kelso, Scotland were owners, and from whose representatives this collection probably originated following the death of Lady Alice Waldie-Griffith in July 1955. The title to Silksworth is traced from the 11th century in two large volumes. The collection includes a bundle of sketch maps relating to farms and coal royalties. Other families associated with the above properties: Buddle, Clavering, Collingwood, Ettricke, Hutchinson, Johnson, Lamb, Maddison, Middleton, Ormston, Robinson, Vane-Tempest, Watson.

Deposited with the University of Durham's Department of Palaeography and Diplomatic (from 1990 part of the University Library's Archives and Special Collections department) in 1957 by P.J. King of Northamptonshire Record Office, acting for Northamptonshire Records Committee.
