Papers of John Matheson of Fernaig

This material is held atUniversity of Aberdeen Collections

Scope and Content

Typed transcripts of letters sent by John Matheson (b 1696) to Baillie John McIntosh, merchant, of Inverness, mostly regarding orders and payment of goods supplied by McIntosh, but also discussing friends and family known to both men, 1749 - 1759. Most of the letters were sent from Farnaig, but some are addressed from Stratchconnon, Belmaduthy, Edinburgh and Attadale. A family tree of Sir Kenneth Mackenzie of Coul, 1st Baronet (from whom Matheson's second wife, Margaret Mackenzie was descended) is included with the typescript. The family line is traced to Sir Torqhuil Matheson of Matheson, 6th Baronet.

Administrative / Biographical History

John Matheson (b 1696) was the eldest of four sons of Farquhar Matheson of Fernaig, by his second wife and cousin, Mary Macrae, daughter of Christopher Macrae of Ardintoul.

His first wife, a daughter of Mackenzie of Achilty, died whilst young, having borne 2 sons who died in infancy. After her death he married, in 1728, Margaret Mackenzie, daughter of Kenneth Mackenzie of Pitlundie, and by her had 9 children. He bought Attadale in Lochalsh, and Corrychubry in Contin, for his eldest son and heir, Donald Matheson, but Donald, who built the mansion house at Attadale in 1755, died without issue, and in 1763 the estate passed to his brother, Alexander, from whom the Baronets of Lochalsh descend.
