Scope and Content

Notebooks of Major Alfred Heales, FSA (1827-98), ecclesiologist, containing detailed descriptions mostly of interiors of churches and monuments, with other antiquarian extracts; c. 1845-95. See Proc., 2nd ser., 17 (1897-9), 423-4 (obituary). Thirteen volumes:-

Vols. I-VIII. Church notes, compiled on visits mainly in the Home Counties, Oxford and Cambridge, 1845-92. Indexes of parishes in each volume;-

Vol. IX. Index volume. Includes indexes of places and names in Vols. I-VIII, together with lists and indexes relating to a lettered series of notebooks (not in SA) compiled on travels abroad, 1851-95;-

Vol. X. MS extracts (called 'Archaeological Extracts') on antiquarian matters, mostly medieval, from named printed sources:-

Vols. XI-XIII. Press-cuttings and other printed material, laid down, with MS indexes in each volume, c. 1853-93.
