Scope and Content

Records of the Commission and predecessors, including various committees' minutes, correspondence and papers.

Administrative / Biographical History

Appointed as the Social and Industrial Committee in 1923 at the Church Assembly Spring Session (following the report (N.A. 62) of the Committee appointed to consider the question of organising a Social and Industrial Committee). This new Social and Industrial Committee was to deal with social and industrial matters. Its duties were further increased in 1924 to include questions relating to overseas settlement, while at the same time becoming a commission, making it the Social and Industrial Commission of the Church Assembly. In 1925 (Spring Session of the Church Assembly), the commission reported on overseas settlement, recommending that the Church Assembly create a Council of Overseas Settlement. In 1939 the Church Assembly approved a revised constitution for this commission, paper (C.A. 632), but it did not actually get formed until 1941, due to the outbreak of the war.
