Scope and Content

Commonplace book of James Pow compiled between circa 1760 and 1810 containing extracts from various printed sources on a variety of subjects. Also included are two copies of loose notes on the authorship of the book written by James Pow's grandson, James Brough Pow 12 Oct 1866.

Administrative / Biographical History

James Pow (1738-1817) for nearly fifty years held an appointment in the Customs Office in Newcastle-upon-Tyne having moved south from the borders near Coldstream prior to 1745. (Source: note written about his grand father by James Brough Pow)
