Papers of Neocles and Sam Mussabini

Papers of Neocles Mussabini and his son, Scipio 'Sam' Mussabini [Harold Abrahams' athletics trainer]. The collection includes papers relating to Neocles' newspaper articles published in the Pall Mall Gazette, under the editorship of W. T. Stead. This includes material relating to the debate that followed Stead's 'procuring of a virgin' [the Eliza Armstrong case].

Papers relating to Sam Mussabini include his passport, with stamps associated to his visit to France for the 1924 Paris Olympic Games.

Scipio Africanus Mussabini (1867-1927), formerly Scipio Arnaud Godolphin, and nicknamed 'Sam' because of his initials, was an athletics coach best known for his work with Harold Abrahams. He was the fourth of six children of Neocles Gaspard Mussabini (1827–1915), a journalist and war correspondent, and his wife, Aline née Farçat (c 1840–c 1911) of Grenoble, France. His name was registered at birth as Scipio Arnaud Godolphin Mussabini, but he later used the forenames Scipio Africanus.

On 14 September 1885, giving his age as twenty-one, Sam Mussabini married Emma Nicholls (1866–1961), the daughter of Samuel Nicholls, a farmer, of Hove, Sussex; she was then expecting the first of their seven children. During the 1890s he trained members of the Polytechnic cycling club and, from about 1900, referred to himself as an athletics coach. Six of his athletes won a total of five gold, two silver, and four bronze medals in track events at the 1920, 1924, and 1928 Olympic Games. In 1923 he was a member of the British Olympic commission which made preparations for the British team at the 1924 Paris Olympic Games and also coached Vera Palmer-Searle, who set three women's world sprinting records in 1923 and 1924.

He died near Calais, France, on 25 March 1927 and was buried in the family grave at Hampstead cemetery.

Most of the Mussabini family stopped using this surname around the time of the Second World War, to avoid confusion with the surname Mussolini.
