Scope and Content

During his researches, Pape amassed a significant quantity of material relating to North Staffordshire in the form of manuscripts, printed works, photographs, slides, newspaper cuttings, maps and plans. Pape's research notes and correspondence with fellow historians are also preserved. Significant papers within the collection are William Yates's map of Staffordshire, 1775; a poll book for Newcastle-under-Lyme parliamentary election 1841; and J. Ingamell's Directory of Newcastle-under-Lyme, 1871 with Pape's extensive annotations and insertions of local press cuttings.

Administrative / Biographical History

Thomas Pape 1872-1970 was a schoolmaster holding posts in Newcastle-under-Lyme at the Middle School, the Orme Boys School and Wolstanton Grammar School from 1907 until his retirement in 1933. He devoted a great deal of his time to historical and archaeological research, studying especially Newcastle-under-Lyme and surounding areas, and was the author of several books and numerous articles. He was elected a member of the North Staffordshire Field Club in 1917 and served as the president in 1931.
