Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton, 3rd Bart., (1837-1915), philanthropist and colonial governor, was returned as Liberal M.P. for King's Lynn, 1865-1868, after marrying Lady Victoria Noel, youngest daughter of the Earl of Gainsborough in 1862, with whom he had five sons and five daughters. Although unsuccesful in his attempts to re-enter Parliament after 1868, he maintained a variety of social interests, from the movement to save Epping Forest (begun in 1866), through membership of the Church Missionary Society, to his presidency of the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society (from 1899). From 1895 to 1898, he served as Governor of South Australia, and was created GCMG in recognition of his services. He spent the last part of his life on his estates in Cromer, Norfolk.
