The collection comprises a spiral bound copy of a word-processed history of the Beaumont family of Barrow Hall in Barrow upon Trent, south Derbyshire. It records the history of the family from 1540 to 1880, connecting them with the history of their adopted village and the wider national, political and religious scene.
The volume is divided into 15 chapters, plus appendices including a pedigree and maps of the Barrow upon Trent area.
The Beaumont family were minor gentry in north Leicestershire and south Derbyshire, and Catholic recusants. John Beaumont (1612-1697) fought for the King in the Civil War; his grandson John Beaumont (1691-1763) was tried as a Jacobite following the rebellion in 1715. John Beaumont (1778-1834) was a friend of William Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire, and married Mary Curzon, younger daughter of the 2nd Baron Scarsdale of Kedleston Hall. The male line of Beaumonts became extinct with the death of John and Mary's son John in 1879, who had sold Barrow Hall two years before his death.
David Cox was a local historian in the East Midlands and died in 1994.
