Scope and Content

Plans and elevations acquired from the Rural Industries Bureau, 35 Camp Road, London SW19, by Godfrey Rubens when he was about to set up the Shepherds Well Pottery in Hampstead.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Rural Industries Bureau was established in 1923 to undertake research into, provide information about, and give advice and training to rural industries. It was funded by the Development Commission, and trustees were appointed by the Ministry of Agriculture and associated government departments. Most of the bureau's work was in English counties, and it operated primarily through a network of Rural Community Councils. In 1969 the Bureau merged with the Rural Industries Loan Fund to create the Council for Small Industries in Rural Areas (COSIRA)

The archive of the Rural Industries Bureau (1923-1968) and that of its successor body, the Council for Small Industries in Rural Areas, are held at the National Archives.
