Administrative / Biographical History

The South African United Party was formed when the economic downturn of the early 1930s led to a coalition between the ruling conservative Nationalist Party under J.B.M. Hertzog and the South African Party under General Jan Christian Smuts. The coalition, led by Smuts, only lasted until 1948, when the breakaway Herenigde (Reunited) Nationalist Party under D.F. Malan won the general elections. The H.N.P. held power until 1994, while the United Party remained the chief opposition till its dissolution in 1977.
