Scope and Content

This collection is divided into three sections.

  • Section One: History of Peace Councils. This consists of correspondence between Eileen Bernal and others on the history of the Peace Councils Movement, the history of Reading and Dorking peace councils and scrap books 1950 - 1972.
  • Section Two: The History of Local and National Peace Councils. This consists of interviews and reminiscences with members of various local peace councils 1969 - 1973.
  • Section Three: Peace Organisations Outside Britain. This consists of reminiscences and correspondence relating to peace organisations in Greece, Guyana, South Africa and New Zealand 1972 - 1973.

Eileen Bernal fl 1938 - 1972

Eileen Bernal was the wife of John Desmond Bernal (1901 - 1971), Professor of Crystallography at Birkbeck College, University of London, and a founder member of the World Peace Council. They married in 1922 and had two sons.
