The collection comprises lectures on scientific subjects delivered by Lillie at the Mechanics' Institutes of Launceston and Hobart, Tasmania.

John Lillie D.D. was the grandfather of the biologist Denis Gascoigne Lillie (b 1888).

The Wellcome Library holds papers of Lillie's grandson, the biologist Denis Gascoigne Lillie (b.1888), held as MSS.3259-3285 and 5252-5254. Among these, MS.5254, comprising correspondence and very miscellaneous papers, includes material on earlier generations of the Lillie family, among them letters to John Lillie D.D.
