Administrative / Biographical History

Harold Josiah Finch was born in 1898, son of Josiah Finch, Esq. of Barry. In 1917 Harold Finch became a clerk in the Tredegar Valley District Miners' Office and later worked in the Compensations Department of the South Wales Miners' Federation (SWMF). He was a member of Mynyddislwyn Urban District Council 1922-1923 and was a Trades Union Official in the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). Harold Finch was Labour MP for Bedwellty division of Monmouthshire from 1950 until his retirement in 1970 and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Welsh Office 1964-1966. In 1959-1960 he was opposition spokesman on Fuel and Power. Harold Finch was knighted in 1976.
