Administrative / Biographical History

Queen Lozikeyi was one of the widows of Lobengula, King of the Ndebele.

Lobengula (c1833-1894) succeeded his father in 1870 as King of the Ndebele. From his kraal at Bulawayo, he tried to prevent encroachments by European colonists, etc.. However, in 1888, he granted mineral rights in Ndebeleland to Cecil Rhodes. These concessions formed the basis for the foundation of the British South Africa Company in 1889. In 1893, due to Company pressure on Ndebele territory, Lobengula declared war on the British. The swift British victory was aided greatly by the Company's use of the Maxim machine gun. Lobengula died whilst fleeing north.
