Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Barbara Hoather was born in 1906 in Greenwich. She was a short-course student at Ethel Mairet's workshop, Gospels, in 1944.
According to Margot Coatt's biography of Ethel Mairet, Barbara Hoather was 'in charge of crafts at Bishop Otter Teacher Training College in Chichester [in the 1930s-40s] and later went on to teach at Bromley School of Art'. Joy Sinden, one of the students who she encouraged to spend time at Gospels, has related that although she died tragically young, Barbara Hoather influenced innumerable students and that 'most, if not all, her teaching was based on Mrs Mairet's ideas… Temperamentally she was very much like Mrs Mairet and, like her, an excellent teacher'.
She died aged 43 in 1950.
