Papers of Francis Harrison (fl 1895-1988), student of Physics at University College Nottingham and school teacher, 1900-1925

The collection relates exclusively to the years spent by Francis Harrison (fl 1895-1988) as a physics student at University College Nottingham, and contains information about the texts used by physics students at this time. It includes the following principal series:

• Student notebooks containing lecture notes and homework exercises. Titles include: 'Electrolysis notes', 'Sound', 'Magnetism', 'Practical physics', and 'Light'. 1919-1922 (MS 465/1);
• Student notes, lecture notes and homework exercises. 1919-1922 (MS 465/2);
• Issues of University College Nottingham's student magazine, 'The Gong' 1919-1925 (MS 465/3);
• Other printed items relating to Harrison's time at University College Nottingham (UCN) comprising: the 1921-22 issue of the Journal of the Physical and Chemical Society of UCN; 'Sir Alfred Ewing', a 1946 biography by Professor Bates of UCN; a short printed biography of Professor Barton, Harrison's Physics teacher at UCN, 1925; and a reprint of an article by Professor Barton relating to the vibration of violins (MS 465/4);
• Student notes, loose leaf, found amongst printed text-books owned by Francis Harrison. c.1919-1922 (MS 465/5);

Francis Arthur Harrison was born in about 1895 and was educated at Alderman Newton's School, Leicester, St. Paul's School, Cheltenham and Battersea Polytechnic, London. He served in Malta and France during the First World War and rose to the rank of sergeant before returning home with a hand injury. He was awarded a scholarship which enabled him to attend University College Nottingham (now The University of Nottingham) from 1919-1922. He sat the intermediate science course before progressing to a Physics degree. While at Nottingham he was a keen soccer player and violinist. After college, he was appointed as a Physics master at Bablake School, Coventry where he taught for 38 years until his retirement in 1960. He lived for many years at Knightcote, Warwickshire.

The collection has been divided by document type into series. Within these series, items have been arranged chronologically.
