Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Established in 1711 as a shipbuilding company in Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland, Scotts of Greenock acquired all of the machinery for its vessels from Robert Napier & Sons Ltd or James Cook, both of Glasgow, Scotland. This happened until 1825 when machinery was acquired from the Scotts' Engineering Co Ltd, Greenock. By this time, Scotts of Greenock had become part of Scott, Sinclair & Co, being incorporated as Scotts of Greenock (Est'd 1711) Ltd in 1899 at the same time as Scotts' Shipbuilding & Engineering Co Ltd.
Scotts' Shipbuilding & Engineering Co Ltd , Greenock, reformed Scotts of Greenock (Est'd 1711) Ltd as a holding company in 1967 to handle the non-shipbuilding business assets and investments not being transferred to the merged Scott Lithgow company.
In 1977, ownership of the company transferred to John Swire & Sons Ltd , London, England.
