Milk Marketing Boards were cooperatives established in the 1930's to preserve incomes of farmers who produced milk, protecting them from the large dairy companies. The National Farmers Union set up regional boards in England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Boards sold milk for farmers, paying farmers in proportion to the milk provided by them. The Board system of marketing was abolished in 1994
