These records are mainly UK patent specifications, principally for lawn mowers and some are duplicates of those held at the Signal Tower Museum Ladyloan, Arbroath.

Administrative / Biographical History

Alexander Shanks was founded in 1840. It operated from the Dens Iron Works, Arbroath, until 1967 when it was taken over by Giddings and Lewis Fraser Ltd and restyled Gilman-Fraser Ltd. The firms speciality lay in lawn mower manufacture, but it also undertook a wide variety of general engineering work.

The majority of the firm's surviving publications about 100 in number dating from the 1840's to c.1950 are housed in the Signal Tower Museum, Ladyloan, Arbroath together with two of the actual lawn mowers, including the original machine.
