Administrative / Biographical History
The Coltness Iron Co Ltd , coal and iron masters, Newmains, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, had interests in the coalfields around Warwickshire and Coventry, England, from c1902 . The company owned the Warwickshire Coal Co Ltd with collieries at Kersley, near Coventry, and Sandwell Park in south Staffordshire. William Hamilton Telfer, the managing director of the companies, was interested in mining safety, miner's welfare and colliery housing and was a director of this company.
Coventry Colliery Industrial Housing Ltd was founded c1932 and provided homes for the colliery workers at the Kersley colliery. The companies directors were James and Henry Houldworth (later Lord Invernairn) and William Telfer. The company's auditors were Kerr, MacLeod and MacFarlan , chartered accountants, Glasgow, Scotland. As well as raising money through shares, the company loaned money from the Coltness Iron Co Ltd, Bedworth Urban District Council and Meriden Urban District Council. The company was in existence until at least 1946 when the collieries were nationalised as part of the National Coal Board in 1947 under the terms of the Coal Industry Nationalisation Act 1946.
