Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The establishment of the Nazi regime in January 1933 resulted in the immediate and massive repression of German communism. Many German communists were systematically interned or killed by the regime. While most communist parties experienced a notable surge of popular support during this period, the Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands (KPD) failed to recruit virtually any new members from 1933 until the collapse of the Nazi regime in 1945. However, many German communists kept up their resistance through the distribution of anti-Nazi literature. Until 1935 most of the literature was printed in Germany, but from this date communists had to rely on materials printed abroad and smuggled into Germany by couriers.
