The Associated Society of Blacksmiths was formed in 1845. It had the alternative name of the Associated Blacksmiths of Scotland. In 1910 it changed its name to the Associated Blacksmiths and Ironworkers Society. In 1912 the Blacksmiths' Union joined and in 1914 the National United Society of Smiths and Hammermen. During the 1920s the union changed its name to the Associated Blacksmiths', Forge and Smithy Workers' Society. In 1963 it amalgamated with the United Society of Boilermakers and Iron and Steel Shipbuilders to form the Amalgamated Society of Boilermakers, Blacksmiths, Shipbuilders and Structural Workers, which later became the GMB.
