Administrative / Biographical History

A nun is a member of a religious community of women, typically living under vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience in the enclosure of a monastery. Religious communities throughout England were destroyed by King Henry VIII when he separated the Church of England from papal authority during the English Reformation. Monasteries and convents were deprived of their lands and possessions, and monastics were forced to either live a secular life on a pension or flee the country. Many Roman Catholic nuns went to France.
