Scope and Content

Papers of A.N.L. Munby concerning the writing of his Phillipps studies (5 vols., Cambridge, 1951-60) and the history and location of the manuscripts of Sir Thomas Phillipps. The papers include:

  • Correspondence and notes, 1945-74
  • Photographs of Phillipps, his contemporaries and properties, 19th-20th century
  • Publications of the Middle Hill Press with other items printed for Phillipps, 1818-65
  • Miscellaneous printed items, 1823-1860
  • List and sale catalogues of Phillipps manuscripts, 1886-1975

Administrative / Biographical History

Alan Noel Latimer Munby (1913-1974) was a librarian, bibliographer, historian and book collector. Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872), Baronet, was an antiquary, collector of manuscripts and books. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.
