Sessions Rolls: Doncaster Borough Court of Quarter Sessions

The sessions rolls contain all the original records which came before the court. They survive only from 1919 to 1932 and from 1953 to 1971. However, a small number of documents which would probably should have been placed on the rolls have survived and are to be found at QS/10 below. Although technically described as rolls, by this date the original documents generated by session business in Doncaster as elsewhere were preserved in the form of bundles. In earlier years, where there are relatively few papers, they have been grouped by years, but from 1925, there is usually a roll for each quarter session, namely Epiphany [January], Easter [April], Midsummer [July], and Michaelmas [September or October]. The most significant contents of the sessions rolls are depositions (sworn statements by witnesses); from Epiphany 1928 (9/17 onwards) the rolls generally include a calendar of prisoners for the session.
