Scope and Content

Towersey is a village to the east of Oxfordshire, not far from Thame. It was part of Buckinghamshire until 1933, and remained part of the archdeaconry of Buckingham until 1973. Until 1841, Towersey was a chapelry of Thame, and it was a peculiar of Thame until 1946. In 1939, Towersey was united with Aston Sandford in Buckinghamshire (the two parishes had been held in plurality for several years before), but in 1973 Towersey was transferred to join the parish of Thame. It should be noted that some records concerning Aston Sandford may be found in PAR274/10.

The parish records of Towersey have been deposited at various times: two deposits were originally made with the Bodleian Library in 1977 and 1979, and two others directly with Oxfordshire Archives in 1995 and 1996, which were assigned the Accession Numbers 3991 and 4121. Two appendices list the original contents of each accession, and provide a concordance of old and new references.

Catalogued by Robin Darwall-Smith in September 1996.
