This Collection contains items by and about G. A. Henty:
Rev. Brown accumulated this collection over a period of approximately 60 years between 1950 and 2005. The first books in the collection came from his father Albert Brown. In February 1900 Albert Brown won the Catechism prize at St. Paul's Church, Forest Hill, which was a first edition of G. A Henty's 'Won by the Sword". Albert was later presented with four other first editions 'Under Wellington's Command', 'With Moore at Corunna', 'The Tiger of Mysore' and 'The Bravest of the Brave.' These five books went on to form the nucleus of the Brown collection.
Whilst building his collection of Henty books, Brown also accumulated a large amount of Hentyana- writing about G. A. Henty and his work. This includes titles of volumes by G. A. Henty, articles in 19C periodicals by G. A. Henty and books, journal articles (including 19C period articles about him)
G. A. Henty (1832-1902): After an eventful career as a war correspondent, G. A. Henty wrote historical adventure stories for boys. His first children's book was published in 1871. His final book was published posthumously in 1906. Both his journalistic career and his writing coincided with the period of rapid British imperial expansion during the reign of Queen Victoria.
