Scope and Content

The collection includes personal papers, photographs and memorabilia of Catherine Drake, but is primarily of interest within the university collections because of the relevance to her period of study at University College, when its creator, as Catherine Rooston, undertook teacher training at the Day Training College. Whether she continued to a career in teaching is not recorded. The principal sections in the archive are:

  • Scrapbook album containing poems, messages, drawings and printed and photographic images, compiled mainly during Catherine Drake's period of study at Nottingham Day Training College and contributed to by more than thirty people. 1898-1914 (MS 349/1);
  • Personal papers of Catherine Drake comprising her Birth certificate, marriage gift card, marriage certificate, copy of will, and a list of certificates issued by Nottingham Day Training College in 1902. 1880-1967 (MS 349/2/1-4);
  • Photographs including a wedding photograph of William and Catherine Drake (1917), a Rooston family portrait outside their home in West Bridgeford (c. 1902), University College Nottingham football and cricket teams (1923-1925), and a concert party (1924) c.1900-c.1910 (MS 349/3/1-8).

Administrative / Biographical History

Catherine Boyd Drake was born in Belfast in 1880. She was the daughter of Joseph Robinson Rooston and Margaret Haithwaite Rooston (ne Boyd). She had two sisters, Minnie Haithwaite and Margaret. Catherine studied to become a teacher at Nottingham Day Training College (now the University of Nottingham) between 1900 and 1902. At the time of her training, her address was Hollywood, Radcliffe Road, West Bridgeford, Nottinghamshire. Catherine married William Drake, an engineer's surveyor from Sheffield in 1917 when she was living in Castle Boulevard, Nottingham. Her will is dated 27 September 1967 and her niece, Marjorie Allen, is the only individual named as a beneficiary.
