Helen Bain Album

An album compiled by Helen H Bain, who worked as a nurse at the South African Military Hospital, Richmond, and the King George V Hospital, Dublin. The album contains photographs of patients and staff at these hospitals, as well as photographs of the buildings and surrounding area, as well as written messages from patients and friends.

Helen H Bain was born in Dundee, where she trained as a nurse at the Royal Infirmary. From about 1917 to 1919 she worked at the South African Military Hospital in Richmond Park. The hospital had opened in 1916 as the South African Hospital and merged in July 1918 with the Richmond Military Hospital. It was paid for by the South African Hospital and Comforts Fund Committee, whose members were mostly wealthy South Africans living in the UK. It closed as a hospital in 1921 and was demolished in 1925. In 1920, Helen went to work at the King George V Hospital in Dublin.
