E.E. Dodd / E.P. Thompson research correspondence

The correspondence is friendly and detailed and sheds light on the historian at work, especially in relation to 'Whigs and hunters', 'Albion's fatal tree' and 'Customs in common' (1991).

Edward Palmer Thompson's (1924-1993) best-known historical work is 'The making of the English working class' (1963). It was followed in the 1970s by further important historical publications which concentrated largely on the 18th century. These included 'Whigs and hunters' (1975), 'Albion's fatal tree' (1975), and 'The poverty of theory' (1978). He also wrote biographies of William Morris (1955) and William Blake (1993).

Edward Ernest Dodd worked with Thompson on several occasions during the 1960s and 1970s, carrying out research for him at the Public Record Office, the British Museum, and local record offices. Dodd was also an historian in his own right, having published a 'History of the Bingley Grammar School 1529-1929' (1930) and 'Bingley parish and township records' (1953).
