Administrative / Biographical History

This body was formed on 1 May 1959 by the amalgamation of the North East Coast Steel Makers' Association and the Scottish Steel Makers' Association. With the Midland and Welsh Steel Makers' Association, it comprised the Heavy Steel Associations which were members of the British Steel Producers' Conference, which was affiliated to the British Iron and Steel Federation. On 10 February 1965 it and the Midland and Welsh Steel Makers' Association were terminated and the British Heavy Steel Association was formed.

The deposits made in the Centre by British Steel plc include records of the North East Coast Steel Makers' Association and the Scottish Steel Makers' Association. The largest part of these deposits is formed by the records of the British Iron and Steel Federation (BISF) and its predecessor, the National Federation of Iron and Steel Manufacturers. The deposits also include records of a number of regional and sectional iron and steel employers' organisations associated with the BISF, the statutory Iron and Steel Board and the nationalised British Steel Corporation.
