Administrative / Biographical History

Donald Macmillan was born on 10 April 1919 . He was a medical student at the University of Glasgow from 1938-1939  and from 1946-1952 . During the Second World War (1939-1945) he served as a Captain in the Highland Light Infantry. During his time at the University of Glasgow he was President of the Students' Representative Council (1951) and chairman of the Students' Quincentenary Committee (1948-1951) which organised the Quincentenary Celebrations of 1951. He was also a member of Glasgow University's Conservative Club Committee and was part of Walter Elliot's election campaigns in Glasgow. After graduation he held posts at hospitals in Glasgow and eventually became Director of the Nuffield Centre for Health Services Studies at the University of Leeds in 1962. Donald Macmillan was also Adviser in Health Administration to the Imperial Governments of Iran (1965-1972), Pakistan (1969) and Kuwait (1977-1982). Between 1963 and 1976 he was a visiting lecturer on various University Health Programmes in the United States. He married Jean A Taylor (MA Glasgow 1948) in 1950 and had two daughters. Donald Macmillan died on 10 April 1982 .
