Richmond Theatre (1899-date) Collection

The Richmond Theatre Collection consists of photographs, theatre programmes, playbills and handbills from 1903, shortly after the Theatre opened in 1899, to 2014.

F.C. Mouflet, proprietor of the Greyhound Hotel in George Street, Richmond, acquired a site on the Little Green next to the public library, and commissioned Frank Matcham – the leading theatre architect of the day – to design it. On 18th September 1899, the Richmond Theatre and Opera House opened with a performance of Shakespeare's As You Like It. The theatre went through several name changes until 1924, when it reverted to the Richmond Theatre – the name that still is used today.

The Richmond Theatre Collection is arranged in six series:

• DC1/3 Photographs of theatre buildings and events, c1950-c1970
• DC1/4 Programmes c1903-c2014
• DC1/5 Playbills and handbills, c1950-c2014
• DC1/6 Special events documents, c1911-c1991
