Scope and Content

The collection of commemorative material includes: the correspondence between Furness, Edinburgh University, and organisers of the University of Munich commemoration; list of international guests; postcards of the University of Munich; menus; miscellaneous ephemera from theatres and concert halls; formal programme of events taking place between 25 June and 1 July 1972; formal invitation to Professor N. A. Furness; programme for celebration concert (Orff's 'Carmina Burana') in the Herkulessaal der Residenz zu München, 27 June 1972; envelope with greetings card and invitation to concert on 30 June from Mayor of Landshut, plus various ransport tickets and ticket stubs; 5 miscellaneous newspaper supplements or parts or cuttings; 1 copy ofMünchner StadtanzeigerFreitag 30 Juni 1972 with coverage of events; 1 newspaper supplement toDonau KurierJuni 1972 entitled '500 Jahre Universität Inglostadt Müchen'; and 1 celebration pamphlet 'Ingolstadt Universitätsstadt Von 1472 bis 1800. Wann wieder?'

Administrative / Biographical History

1972 was the 500th Anniversary year of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich, Germany. The University was founded in 1472 by Louis the Rich, Duke of Bavaria-Landshut. This first Bavarian university was originally sited in Ingolstadt and became finally located in Munich in 1826.

Professor N. A. Furness attended the week-long formal celebrations in Bavaria in late June 1972, representing Edinburgh University.

At the time, Munich was one of the cities 'twinned' with Edinburgh.
