Administrative / Biographical History

Pembroke Poor Law Union was formed in 1837 under the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834. Its operation was overseen by an elected Board of Guardians representing its 29 constituent parishes in Pembrokeshire. The Union built a workshouse in 1839, north of Pembroke. After the Local Government Act 1929, the Union was abolished and its duties transferred to the Public Assistance Committee of Pembrokeshire County Council.
