Scope and Content

Comprises charter of Richard I to Hugh de Nonant, Bishop of Coventry, November 30, 1189. Granting and confirming the bishop in all his manors, lands, men and churches etc. of Coventry, Lichfield, Chester, Shrewsbury and Gnosall, and of the powers of Sheriff etc. Executed by William [de Longchamp] Bishop elect of Ely, the king's chancellor.

Also attached is a strip containing a memorandum by A[lexander de Swereford], Archdeacon of Shropshire stating that quittance from murder fines in three of the Bishop's manors in Staffordshire was obtained in 1221-1222.

Administrative / Biographical History

The donee, witnesses and William de Longchamp who executed this charter were all staunch supporters of Richard I (1157-1199) and benefited from their connection with him. Hugh Puiset was made justiciar. Hubert Walter became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1193. Henry de Longchamp, William de LongchampCHapos;s brother became Sheriff of Herefordshire and William Marshal later became Earl of Pembroke. Alexander de Swereford (1176? - 1246) who wrote the memorandum was a baron of the exchequer and the reputed compiler of the Red Book of the Exchequer. Shortly before writing the memorandum he had been sent on a diplomatic mission to Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, (1173 - 1240), Prince of North Wales.
