Scope and Content

The collection contains reports and interviews recorded on tapes and transcripts produced by Dr Molly Andrews, in the course of a research project entitled 'The Evolving Revolution: conversations with Internal Critics of the former East Germany'. The project involved interviews with critics of East Germany or the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Demokratische Republik, DDR) to reunification in 1990 and the revolutionary events preceding it. The collection includes the following series:

  • Interview recordings on tape cassettes, 1992 (MS 690/1);
  • Interview transcripts, 1992 (MS 690/2);
  • Interview summaries, 1992 (MS 690/3);
  • Report about the project, 1992 (MS 690/4).

Administrative / Biographical History

Dr Molly Andrews is senior lecturer of Psychosocial Studies in the University of East London's Department of Human Relations, with a particular interest in political psychology and the psychology of patriotism.

'The Evolving Revolution' project aimed to examine the way in which internal critics of the former East Germany or the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Demokratische Republik, DDR) interpreted the dramatic changes experienced by the country during and after reunification with West Germany in October 1990 and the revolutionary events of 1989 that led to it. The project involved interviews with 27 German men and women. The interviews were conducted between February and April 1992 by Dr Andrews with the assistance of an interpreter. The project was funded by the Economic Social Research Council (ESRC).

Custodial History

On the project's completion, Dr Andrews deposited the interview transcripts with Qualidata, the University of Essex's qualitative data service hosted by the UK Data Archive, which is an ESRC supported venture. Qualidata deposited the material with The University of Nottingham's Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections in September 1998.
